Curfew was relaxed for three hours on Thursday for women and children following improvement in situation in the communal riot-hit coastal town of Veraval in Junagadh district of Gujarat, that had claimed two lives and left eight persons injured on July 26. The curfew, that was re-imposed on Wednesday noon after locals indulged in a scuffle with police over arrest of youths, was relaxed from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon, officials said in Ahmedabad. "There was no untoward incident reported during curfew relaxation period. We will review the situation after 12:00 pm and then decide if the relaxation period should be extended," Junagadh District Collector Rohit Pathak told PTI. Police have arrested 81 persons of both communities and registered offences of rioting, arson and murder in the sudden burst of communal violence in the coastal town over an incident of eve-teasing. One person was killed in police firing and another in stabbing during the violence. However, the main accused, a 30-year-old man who allegedly eve-teased the ninth standard girl, was absconding, police said. Officials were also yet to nab the accused, who allegedly stabbed a person of majority community to death during the course of communal violence. Close to 50 shops and as many vehicles were torched in the mob frenzy. |
